THANKS!Â

I want to say thank you again for supporting REDEEM HAITI (RH) in 2011. The Christmas project was a great success. In fact, it is continuing to breed reconicliation between two people groups that is unprecedented in the histroy of Hispañola and it’s being led by churches and Gospel loving men like Stanley Phillipe. Stanley expresses his gratitude:

Words can’t express our gratitude! We are so thankful for your support and prayers! The dinner was a total success, a blessing to the community. It was such a great experience, we had people from different walks of life, different nationalities. We had college students, poor, diplomats, Christians, non christians, Haitian and Dominicans.

Without your prayers, your gift and the gifts of others we wouldn’t be able to make this a reality. Thank you so much for believing in what we are doing. Thank you for being part of what God is doing. Thank you for your generosity, partnership and prayers.

For such a time, God has connected us: to impact our communities, to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, to preach the acceptable year of the Lord.

Take a look at the following link to get a glimpse of what I’m talking about:

ADVANCE THE GOSPEL THIS CHRISTMAS

In the efforts to continue developing relationships and advancing the Gospel within the Haitian refugee community, a Christmas celebration is planned to give over 400 people a Christmas meal as well as gifts for children. Last year’s dinner was a great success and helped launch relationships, this year we are looking to do the same on an even larger scale. In attendance this year will be Haitian refugees, Haitian college students, as well as members of the Haitian Counsular, who represent the rights of Haitian refugees. This is a great opportunity for Gospel ministry to continue and we need your support to make this a reality. A donation of any amount would be great and of course your prayers are always coveted. If you would like to make a donation to this project feel free to donate now or mail your check to Grace to the Nations (P.O. Box 70, Canton, GA 30169). All donations raised before Christmas will go toward this project.

THE YEAR IN REVIEW

The REDEEM HAITI project continues to move forward in 2011. The goal is for the Gospel of Jesus Christ to advance in Hispañola, the island of Haiti and the Dominican Republic. It is a privilege to partner with a full-time, Gospel-soaked minister, Stanley Phillipe, in this work. Stanley leads the day to day, on the ground ministry efforts. There is a strategy in place for advancing the Gospel and, by God’s grace, doors continue to open.

SO WHAT’S UP?

The strategy is to plant a Haitian church(es) in the midst of the largest Haitian refugee area in Santiago, Dominican Republic. A key focus of the Haitian church plants is to train up Haitians in the Gospel and return them to their cities, towns, and villages all over Haiti, spreading the Gospel in a manner that we could never accomplish on our own.

Currently, four education institutions have been identified within the refugee area and Stanley is establishing relationships through outreach in these strategic areas. In fact one of the men Stanley has invested in has already moved into one of these areas, started a LifeGroup, and is beginning to develop the relationships critical for Gospel ministry. The work is young but it is moving forward with progress measured by the Gospel.

Stanley has committed himself full-time to this endeavor and has also transformed his home into a Discipleship Training School where he is teaching others the priority of the Gospel, of being shaped by the Word of God, and the privilege of exercising Gospel ministry and mission to their own people and communities.

The strategy is to develop sustainability over sentimentality. It is a great challenge in our context to raise support without sentimental manipulation, fear, or guilt. Our desire is to gain supporters who want to see the Gospel advanced in Hispañola first and foremost. We pray that the advance of the Gospel would be enough reason to give. Yes, children’s lives are being changed, we are meeting physical needs like food, clothing, shelter, and clean water, and while all of that is worthy and good, our first priority at REDEEM HAITI is to give people their greatest need, the Gospel of Jesus Christ and then to disciple them in that Gospel, helping them fully identify with who they are as Christ followers which leads to lives of worship, stronger communities of faith, and mission to others.

Thank you to all who continue to give of your financial resources. I recognize the sacrifice and your commitment is such an encouragement. We need more of you. If you would like to support Grace to the Nations and REDEEM HAITI on a monthly basis, we would be greatly blessed. Please consider a $5, $10, $25, $50 or even $100 per month to support this Gospel driven ministry. We will commit to giving the people of Haiti the bread of life.

Grace be with you,

God did not turn his back on creation after the Fall.  He did not completely destroy it, which would of been completely just, but instead he chose to redeem it. And he chose to do so within history and through persons and events that go from Noah to Abraham to the second coming of Jesus Christ.  There are many stories between Abraham and the second coming of Jesus and each one contributes to the whole. Each story has a fundamental unity and that is the great saving act of God.  The Old Testament and the New Testament are unified. The Old Testament is not “Salvation Plan A” and the New Testament “Salvation Plan B,” with plan A failing and plan B succeeding.

Let begin in the Old Testament. By Genesis 11 the human race has two huge problems.  Every human heart is sinful and because of this there is brokenness in all of humanity and people are divided and being scattered.  God’s plan of redemption addresses both. It starts in Genesis 12, God calls Abraham and sets into motion a historical force that would not only deal with the problem of human sin but also heal the brokenness of the nations. God elected Abraham for the purpose of blessing all nations on earth.  This is the first great commission in the story of God.  Genesis 12:1-3, “Go…be a blessing…and all the peoples on earth will be blessed through you.”  Sounds familiar to Great Commission at the end of Matthew doesn’t it?  Let’s move on to the exodus.

The exodus shows us God acting as a Redeemer. This is a picture of what redemption looks like when God is in control of it.  It shows us many characteristics of God. His faithfulness, His justice and His love.  And the people who know themselves to be the redeemed people of God, now revealed as YHWH, they are called upon to model before the nations what it means to be redeemed and to live redemptively in their society. Then on Mt. Sinai, God enters into covenant with Israel, but He does so with the rest of the nations in view.  He calls Israel to be His representatives and to be distinctive.  He gave grace in the form of the law, not so that they could earn salvation, they were already redeemed, but to shape them as his model people, to be a light to the nations.

As the history of Israel moves forward to the time of settlement in the promised land, the judges, and the kingdom, it becomes clear that Israel can not and will not live by the standards of God’s law as a response to His saving grace.  Israel proves that it is no different from the other nations.  The law exposes the fact that Israel is in as much need of God’s salvation as are the rest of the nations.  There is no difference, all have sinned.  But even Israel’s failure carries forward the redemptive plan of God.  The Old Testament continues through the prophets who are pointing forward and who keep insisting that God will keep His promise and He will bless the nations and bring salvation to the whole world. He would do so through the failed servant of Israel, indeed He would give them the suffering servant.  The failure of historical Israel was known by God before He entered into covenant with them, indeed before time began, so their failure doesn’t represent a failure in God’s plan.  There is some mystery here as to God’s sovereign purpose, but what we do know is that their failure leads to salvation going to the ends of earth. We can speculate that their failure shows us just how much God loves creation and how He alone is in control of it, but what we know is that their failure leads to salvation that will keep going, just as God has always intended and their failure will make God’s name that much more glorious and known.

We will continue to look at the narrative of redemption and its implications for mission in upcoming posts.

You can find it in Genesis chapters 3-11. This story tells us of human disobedience against the creator God which has absolutely disastrous consequences.  We are told that evil and sin begin to permeate into every aspect of God’s good creation and into every facet of humanity and life on earth.  The story of the Fall teaches us that, physically, we are now subject to decay and death, we live in a fallen environment that is itself under the curse of God.  It teaches us that, intellectually, we use our powers of rationality to explain and excuse and normalize our evil and sin.  It teaches us that, socially, every human relationship is broken and disrupted.  From sexual relationships to parental relationships, to family, to society, to race, ethnicity and so forth.  It also teaches us that, spiritually, we are alienated from God, we reject his righteousness and authority.  Read Romans 1:18-32 if you want an outline and analysis from Paul regarding the fruit of Genesis 3.  This is all terrible.  Indeed so terrible that if there is good news to follow it must be really big news.  And that is exactly what the Gospel gives us.  The Bible gives us a Gospel, good news, that addresses every dimension of the problem that the Fall and sin have created.  Indeed the Gospel tells us that God’s mission is the final destruction of all that is evil from his whole of creation.  This affects our mission.  Our mission must be as whole, as comprehensive in scope as is the Gospel that the whole Bible gives us.

The story of the Bible does not begin at Genesis 3 with the Fall of mankind nor does it end in Revelation 20 with the millennial reign, the defeat of Satan, and the white throne judgment.  The whole story of God begins with Creation and ends with New Creation.  Our theologies, purposes and mission should reflect that reality.  The first section of the story of Creation is vitally important to understanding who we are. You find it in the first two chapters of Genesis.  The story of Creation gives us two foundational bricks upon which we are to build our worldview.  It also answers two fundamental questions that all philosophies and religions must answer. Where are we? Who are we?  The first is asking, what is this universe in which we find ourselves?  Where did it come from and why does it exist and is it even real?  Then the second question is asking, what does it mean to be human? Are we mini-gods, or even gods, or are we just mere animals that have evolved a little further than the rest? Is there any value to human life, any meaning or purpose?  These are large philosophical questions.  The Bible answers every one of them, and if we really believe the Bible then these answers have profound implications for our understanding of the mission of God in this world. Indeed we understand that this mission of God includes human beings like you and I, who are made in the image of God.  We are in God’s creation, he formed and made it out of nothing, and his highest creation was mankind, whom he made in his own image. There is great value in humanity purely based on the fact of creation.  We don’t start at the Fall. If we do, we don’t get the full value of humanity and we will view people wrongly. When we begin at the Fall, we start off with sin, and it won’t be surprising that the mission of reaching humanity is downplayed. We will only see evil sinners and not people created in the image of God.  These are huge parts of the larger story with huge implications upon theology and practice.

And this same story and Spirit is going to fan the flame of mission, missions, and living missionally today and forevermore. I want to define who we are and what we are to be doing as believers, a church, a gospel ministry. After ten years in ministry I’m convinced our poor application in missions is in large part due to the fact that we have not marinated, we have not soaked and stood in the whole counsel of God’s Word.  The whole counsel of Scripture must inform our whole thinking which affects our behavior until we become shaped by the story of this Word and the worldview that it produces, the demands that this Word gives us, and the hope that it sets before us. Until we soak in the full story of God and His Word we will not accomplish, we will not participate with any joy or satisfaction, in that which God has given us and purposes us to.

So what is the whole story of God? To see the full story of God in His Word is to imagine an actual straight line with which you can plot key points. Â The four major sections of the biblical story are: Creation, Fall, Redemption, and New Creation. We will look at each section in subsequent posts.

I am pretty much going to be God’s gift to the world. That is kind of how I once felt anyway. Nurtured and raised in a faithful, godly home, happily married to the man who held all my firsts, surrounded by a loving and stalwart community of believers, and loaded with an arsenal of culture, Christian living, and theology books under my belt, I was eager and ready to gift the world with my faithfulness.

God had instilled in my husband and me a passion for outreach and ministry since we were both very young, so shortly after we were married I began volunteering as a mentor at a crisis pregnancy center in addition to our involvement in the church. Certainly God would use my knowledge and years of steady obedience to impact the lives of these needy women and lead them to Jesus. How soon I became frustrated though! It was not with those I came into contact with that I was frustrated; it was with my own inability to connect. I saw other mentors stepping and speaking into the lives of their clients in a way that formed lasting relationships and produced gradual, positive change and encouragement. I usually felt like I was talking to a wall. How could I empathize with these women whose lives and experiences were so radically different from my own?

I stopped volunteering after the birth of our first child and then as our family expanded I soon became buried in the ministry to my little ones at home. The self sacrifice of raising small children was itself a hands on education of what true ministry looks like. But I still didn’t quite see the layers and layers of self righteousness and pride that were towering walls between me and those I wanted to minister to, inside and outside my home, and God in his mercy began to chip away at them. His tool was suffering. Real, wounding, heartbreaking, confusing, painful suffering. As God took our family through difficult circumstances beyond our control, I knew for the first time what helplessness felt like. Answers fled and I struggled for God’s presence, but in darkness my nakedness was exposed. It was there that my hands and heart began to understand what my head had known, that I was absolutely nothing without Christ.

He does not need me, he does not need my obedience, but in his kindness and his grace he draws me into his story and bids me die to my own righteousness that I may live in his. When I am ministering to another human being, someone made in the image of God and fashioned with his own hand, I have to recognize that I am just as desperate as they. From there I can step into their story, intertwining mine with theirs and pointing them to the only hope that either of us have. And so often during times that I have been able to lay aside my ego long enough to really hear and engage in another person’s story, I feel like it was mine that became the richer for it.

So I am on a long road of learning what it means to “help fix the broken world” as my five year old says, but I have learned that people become projects and another check on my to-do list of good works if I am trying to do justly and love mercy without walking humbly with my God. All ministry is ultimately by him, through him and for him, and I am just so thankful that I get to come along for the ride.

How do we do missions from within God’s mission? We must know the story of God.  God’s story is foundational, it shows us God’s mission, which informs our own purposes and missions.  If there is a key to unlocking missions, this is it. Our zeal for mission projects can come and go, we can lose focus and begin changing and believing that missions is about our productions, our agendas but when we stop and consider the story we are in, our missions flow with God’s mission.

So where do we begin to know God’s mission and story?  From the Great Commission or the book of Acts? No. The reality is that we often begin in the New Testament, thinking that it alone is relevant for the mission of God, for there we find what the early believers and church were doing.  But again we go back to our desire to do before being.   We look for the “what?” and “how?” before we find out “why?”  The early Christians and early church certainly did missions, passionately and boldly.  Was their passion and boldness simply a matter of obedience or was it informed by a larger reality, a larger story?  They were motivated by knowing the story they were in and by the Holy Spirit which gave them the power to accomplish the story.  Understanding the larger story drives the missionary focus which tunes the heart with the power of the Holy Spirit.  The Great Commission is simply the inevitable outcome of the story of Scriptures, leading up to the Messiah and leading on to mission to the nations.

Missions is not mere pragmatism, there must be a balance between theology and missions. Â Jesus spent three years preparing his disciples to go. He had to radically reshape their perspectives, their understanding of Scripture and their own identity. Â I understand that this is difficult. Â To challenge our assumptions is sometimes scary. Â But by doing so we find a new way to live and go about our daily lives, one that is so deeply rooted in the mission of God, in the character and person of God. When our lives are rooted in the story and mission of God, that is when all our other challenges, difficulties, and struggles are put through the lens of the mission of God and a better perspective of life is truly gained. Â I think that would be good for you and me. Â I think that such a challenge and perspective would be good for our ministry of mission to take grace to the nations.
